5 Crochet Thread Tips

Date Added: March 23, 2009 05:59:12 PM

Crochet is one of the most popular hobbies in the United States today with over 10 million people actively engaged. Crochet is an extremely rewarding activity because you are creating your own work of art. However, to create a product you are proud of you are going to need to know about thread. You want to use the best. Sometimes sorting through what is available can be a daunting task and almost make you give up altogether. This article will provide 5 tips to help you with the crochet thread for your project.

Tip 1: Know the material the thread is made of

The most frequently used crochet thread is made of cotton. This is due to the durability of the thread which lasts a decade or more and because it is so easy to wash. Synthetic threads can be nice because of the luster provided but they are very difficult to wash so you should probably avoid them.

Tip 2: Know the different types of crochet thread

There are five major types of crochet thread: the worsted weight, baby or the fingering type, bulky, sport, and chunky. Each type has its own unique weight or thickness with fingering having the finest weight. When you see the words ply in the yarn label this refers to the number of strands entwined together to make the yarn.

Tip 3: Start with "beginner's thread" when learning

When learning to crochet it is better to use a bigger sized thread. Typically the bigger size the thread the better. When you advance to higher levels you can experiment with finer threads. This will only increase your skill.

Tip 4: Always have an extra ball of thread or yarn

When you buy crochet thread always buy an extra ball. The last thing that you want is to reach the end in the middle of your project and be stuck. Colored yarns can even appear different when not bought at the same time. These slight differences can ruin your project.

Tip 5: Never go for the cheap ones

You get what you pay for. Cheap quality yarn can ruin the appearance of your work. It is best to choose the best quality available. Next time you go to the supply shop make a note of which thread is the best quality and use that thread on your projects.

Of course there is a lot more to learn about crochet. Below I have provided a link to a review of a crochet resource that everyone can benefit from. I strongly suggest that you read it.
